TEMPEST shelters: emission security per project

TEMPEST is the discipline of keeping an emission inside. The shelter contributes the shielded volume, the separation and the filtered services; the level and the accreditation belong to the programme and its national security authority.

Levels and zoning

The shelter is engineered to the NATO SDIP-27 level the programme names, inside the SDIP-28 zoning of the site. The zoning decides how much the shelter must attenuate; the level decides what the equipment inside may emit.

Red/black separation

Red (classified) and black (unclassified) circuits are separated in the layout, the cable routes and the point of entry, so no black line runs beside a red one.

Filtered power, fibre-only data

Power enters through filters at the single point of entry; data enters on fibre only. The same chain that gives the EMC and EMP shielding gives the emission security.

Accreditation

A TEMPEST shelter is accredited by the national security authority per project, on the shelter as built with the equipment it carries. Tanax does not accredit and does not hold a TEMPEST certificate; it builds to the requirement and supports the accreditation.

FAQ

Questions procurement asks

Who accredits the shelter?

The national security authority of the customer's country, per project, on the shelter as built with its equipment.

Is a TEMPEST shelter also an EMP shelter?

The shielded enclosure, the gasketed door, the waveguide vents and the single point of entry serve both. The EMP protection is engineered to MIL-STD-188-125-2; the TEMPEST level is specified per project.

Send the requirement. The shelter is engineered to it and measured against it.

Frequency range and attenuation, TEMPEST level and zone, protection level, climate and carrier: name them and the engineering starts. The specification sheet comes with the reply.
