Flat Rack vs Open Top Container: Which One to Choose for Oversized Cargo
Sending a 40-tonne press or a five-metre-wide turbine casing by sea means choosing between two container types that look nothing like a standard box. Both flat racks and open tops solve the same problem: cargo that won't fit inside a closed steel rectangle. But they solve it differently, and picking the wrong one adds cost, delays, and re-handling.
What Each Container Actually Does
Flat rack containers strip away everything except the floor and two end walls. The sides are open, the top is open. Some models have collapsible end walls, letting you fold and stack empty units for the return leg. The platform is reinforced and fitted with lashing rings around the perimeter and down the sides.
Open top containers keep the four walls and floor of a standard box but replace the solid roof with a removable tarpaulin. Loading happens through the open roof via crane or through the standard end doors. The interior dimensions follow ISO standards, so the cargo envelope is predictable.
When to Choose a Flat Rack
Flat racks suit cargo that is too wide or too heavy for any enclosed structure.
Use a flat rack when:
- Cargo overhangs the sides of the unit (machinery wider than roughly 2.3 metres)
- The load is extremely heavy with a low centre of gravity: construction plant, transformer tanks, steel coils
- Side loading is the only option at the origin or destination terminal
- The shipment involves multiple pieces that need lashing across the full platform
- The route includes port-to-port craneage where a platform unit moves more efficiently
Flat racks also suit awkward shapes: a bulldozer blade, a large-diameter pipe section, a static generator frame. Because the sides are completely open, stevedores can secure lashing chains at almost any angle.
One practical note: out-of-gauge flat rack shipments require pre-approval from the carrier, a stowage plan, and sometimes a special cargo surcharge. Build this lead time into your booking.
When to Choose an Open Top
Open tops work best for cargo that is tall but not wide, and where some weather protection matters during transit.
Use an open top when:
- Cargo exceeds door height but fits within the container footprint
- The load is irregular on top but standard in width: large stone blocks, timber bundles, tall industrial pumps
- Top-crane loading is available and side access is not needed
- The destination terminal is not equipped for full OOG flat rack handling
- Light weather protection via tarpaulin is sufficient and cheaper than a special cargo booking
Open tops behave like standard containers in the terminal stack as long as cargo does not break the profile. That makes them easier to slot into regular vessel stowage, which often means shorter booking lead times and more sailing options.
The Three Questions That Decide It
1. Does the cargo break the side profile?
If yes, you need a flat rack. An open top has fixed walls; anything wider than the interior cannot be loaded, and anything protruding through the sides is a structural and safety problem.
2. What loading equipment is available at origin and destination?
Top crane with no side access points toward an open top. Side lift or roll-on/roll-off ramp points toward a flat rack. If both are available, look at the cargo centre of gravity. Heavy and low favours the flat rack platform.
3. Does the route carry OOG restrictions?
Certain inland corridors, rail legs, or port infrastructure impose OOG width limits. An open top that keeps cargo inside the standard profile may clear restrictions that a flat rack with side overhang would fail. Check this with your freight forwarder before booking.
Cost and Availability
Flat racks are less common in the global fleet than open tops. In tight market conditions, open tops are easier to source, especially on shorter routes. Flat rack OOG shipments also carry additional documentation and surcharge requirements that open top shipments may avoid if the load profile stays within standard.
That said, forcing wide or extremely heavy cargo into an open top to avoid OOG fees is a false economy. Damage claims and re-handling costs exceed any surcharge.
